The Regional Academy for Math and Science (RAMS) is a partnership between Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) and area schools and Regents universities. RAMS will provide rigorous and relevant math, science and technology coursework to high school and college students as well as teachers and community members wanting advanced degrees in those subject areas. It will also raise awareness and interest of those subjects among middle school children throughout the region. This facility will also meet other academic needs of NICC students in Oelwein and the surrounding area.
Our Vision
We envision this academy will meet several needs in this region:
1. Increase the number of students interested in math and science at an earlier age. We will engage young learners and get them excited about future possibilities.
2. Strengthen, not supplant, the coursework offered in Iowa’s rural schools. This academy will offer area high school students advanced coursework that schools no longer have the resources in staff, lab space and finances to offer. It will provide opportunities for dual enrollment and college credit and give students a head start on college.
3. Provide advanced degree coursework for teachers of math and science in partnership with Iowa Regents universities to improve the quality and content of science classes for future students. We will offer coursework that is accessible, convenient and flexible.
4. Train community members with skills needed by area business and industry. By training our workforce in emerging fields such as IT and bioscience, we can better recruit and retain business and industry that will grow our communities.
