West Delaware Student Obtains Part-Time Job After Job Shadow Experience Through CLL
March 16, 2017
MANCHESTER—Ethan Uhrig, a junior at West Delaware High School, will have a head start on determining what type of career is right for him after his job shadow experiences through the Northeast Iowa Career Learning Link (CLL) program.
As a participant in CLL through Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC), Uhrig receives one-on-one career counseling by his career coach, Holly Maurer. In addition to the one-on-one counseling sessions, Uhrig also has the opportunity to participate in job shadow experiences in his career fields of choice, including diesel mechanics, welding and auto mechanics.
Last fall, Uhrig participated in a job shadow experiences at McDowell Repair, Inc., to learn more about diesel mechanics and at Henderson Products, Inc., to gain insights into welding. This spring, Uhrig will also participate in an auto mechanics job shadow experience with Runde Auto Group of Manchester. These experiences give the student opportunities to explore different career paths to find the right match. Not only do these experiences help Uhrig weigh his options, he found a part-time job at McDowell Repair as a direct result of his job shadow experience and the connections he made.
“I enjoyed my time with Ethan and learned as much from him as he did from me,” stated Richard McDowell, owner of McDowell Repair.
Experiences through CLL are invaluable not only to students, but also the organizations who allow the student participants to tour their businesses and explore local careers. Benefits of this program include cost savings for students and parents, working with a career coach personally to find the right post-graduation plan and the opportunity to participate in a nationally-recognized, highly visible U.S. Department of Labor grant that showcases great students in northeast Iowa.
