PEOSTA—Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) is hosting an informational training session for the volunteer tutor program on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 3 p.m. in Community Room 203 at the Peosta campus.
The NICC Peosta campus Learning Center is looking to build a group of skilled, local volunteers who possess special expertise in industrial, technical or business fields to tutor students in specific areas, and the informational session will introduce volunteer tutors to the new program. Refreshments and a short tour of the campus will be provided.
“We are looking for possibly retired workers from the trades, such as welding and machining, who have professional expertise in a certain area and know the particular vernacular of a field of study,” said Frank Lammer, NICC Learning Center faculty. “Tutors would provide content-specific learning for students, such as in blueprint reading.”
Volunteers do not need formal teaching experience, tutors will not be required for every subject every semester and hours will vary according to subject and need. Lammer estimated that the time commitment for tutors would be two hours a day, several days a month.
