NICC and Medical Associates Co-sponsoring Medical Assistant Open House on Jan. 24
January 5, 2017
PEOSTA–Community members who plan to begin a medical assisting career in healthcare may be receiving a financial boost to support their education.
One of the Dubuque area’s largest healthcare employers, Medical Associates Clinic & Health Plans, is sponsoring full scholarships for selected students entering the Medical Assistant program at Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) in fall 2017. Medical Associates will hire sponsored and successful students upon completion of the program.
Interested students are encouraged to attend an open house at the NICC Peosta campus on Tuesday, Jan. 24, from 3:30 – 6 p.m. Attendees may use the opportunity to meet with Medical Associates about job openings, the application process, scholarships and the interview and selection process.
NICC admissions staff members will also be available to discuss the Medical Assistant program with prospective students and how to enroll. Additionally, students may tour the health labs on campus.
Dubuque healthcare providers have ongoing workforce needs for trained medical assistant professionals and Katie McClain, senior HR generalist for Medical Associates, emphasized how versatile a role medical assistants serve.
“Medical Associates utilizes medical assistants for direct patient care support in almost all of our clinical departments, both primary and specialty care. Medical assistants may often be misconceived as a front office position in a clinic setting. While some of their job may incorporate these duties, at Medical Associates we have them work closely with nurses, physicians and advanced practice providers to support patient care,” McClain explained. “One of the main benefits of the Medical Assistant program at Northeast Iowa Community College is that it provides six weeks of hands-on clinical experience which prepares graduates to be successful in a true medical assistant setting. Students are exposed to real life situations and work closely with the entire team, including nurses, physicians and advanced practice providers.”
