CALMAR & PEOSTA–The Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) Sports Shooting Team took fifth place and displayed strong individual performances at the Hawkeye Community College Invitational on April 8 hosted by Stockdale’s Gun Club in Ackley.
Participating athletes from NICC included Leo Balk, Andrea Baumler, Joseph Buchheit, Steven Fischer, Manuel Guzman, Levi Klimesh and Devvin Schroeder.
Klimesh, a sophomore from Calmar, was the team’s top athlete for the meet, shooting a score of 97 out of 100. He tied for fifth Individual Male at the event. The top scoring Individual Female was Andrea Baumler with a score of 85 out of 100, taking seventh place. The College finished at fifth place team overall.
Athlete Joseph Buchheit characterized the day’s weather and elements as a factor early on. “It was a windy day, but not enough that we couldn’t adjust; overall, we had a good day as a team. We started off very well and hopefully we can carry the momentum on to the rest of the season.”
NICC Sports Shooting Team coach Paul Flynn echoed Buchheit’s observations and also looked forward to upcoming events this spring.
“We shot well for the first meet of the spring, and we adjusted to challenging windy conditions. We are looking forward to the rest of the season,” Flynn said.
The team’s next meet will be hosted by Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge on Saturday, April 22.
