The Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Career Pathway Certificate teaches the knowledge and skills required to safely operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) and meets the requirements for Entry Level Driver Training as outlined by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), (49 CFR § 380.503). A combination of online, practice range and road time prepares the student to perform vehicle inspection, basic control of the vehicle, backing up, defensive driving and hazard awareness.  Upon successful completion of instruction and testing, students may obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

New federal standards require that participants pass the General Knowledge, Combination Vehicle and Air Brakes tests at the Department of Motor Vehicles and obtain their Commercial Learner’s Permit prior to the start of class.

Students in safety-sensitive programs must present themselves free from the use of all illegal drugs, free from the use and effects of alcohol, and aware of the effects of prescription medication. Consequently, the use of alcohol and/or illegal drugs by students in these areas is prohibited. Students may be required to submit to drug and alcohol screening. Criminal history, driving record, and health may impact your employment opportunities. Upon course completion, a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical may be required for employment.

Upon successful completion of online coursework and testing, graduates of this Career Pathway Certificate may obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and enter the workforce.

Additional Training

A 6-Week Semi Truck Driving Training Program is also available, separate from the CDL program, which includes additional safety training, over the road training and additional behind the wheel time for long haul trucking. Search for upcoming sessions.

Iowa CDL Test Prep App

The State of Iowa provides a mobile app to assist Iowa residents interested in getting a CDL study for the written portion of the exam. The app is an interactive version of the official CDL manual developed by the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators and approved by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, with resource guides and quizzes to help users identify subject areas they may need to study further.
