At Northeast Iowa Community College, all first-time degree seeking students, as well as students seeking select certificates, must complete the ACCUPLACER® placement exam or secure an assessment exemption before registering for classes.
ACCUPLACER® assesses reading comprehension, writing skills and mathematics. Placement tests cannot be “passed” or “failed,” but it is important to take the test seriously to get an accurate measure of academic skills. Study packets are available for preparation.
Placement testing is important because it provides skill-based information that, combined with a student’s academic background, goals and interests, is used by the College to determine appropriate course placement, course selection and educational planning.
Times and Locations
ACCUPLACER® testing hours vary depending on the campus or center attended. Please contact the nearest NICC Testing Center in Calmar, Peosta or Dubuque to schedule your testing appointment. Photo identification is required for testing.
You may retake the ACCUPLACER® twice at no cost for persons applying for admission to NICC. As of November 1, 2015, a retesting fee of $20 is required if retesting in reading, writing or math is requested within one year of the original testing date. Requests to transfer test scores are directed to the testing centers at the Calmar and Peosta campuses. A fee of $20 is charged for transfer requests.
To mail your test scores to another college, complete the release of placement test scores form and submit payment. Scores will be sent within three business days. A fee of $20 is charged for transfer requests.
If a student has completed the ACCUPLACER® testing, but has not applied for admissions to NICC, he/she should complete the steps to enroll. The Admissions Office will mail a letter regarding application status once ACCUPLACER® placement testing has been completed. To inquire on the status of an application, call or visit the Admissions Office. ACCUPLACER® test scores are valid for three years from the date of the test. Once accepted to the College, students will receive an admissions packet with additional information about NICC.
Understanding Placement Scores
Placement scores determine placement in reading, writing and math courses in addition to satisfying specific program admission requirements. Academic advisors can assist students with understanding their ACCUPLACER® test scores and appropriate course placement during their advising appointment. Students who believe their initial test score could improve have the option to retest. Before retesting, please contact the Provost's Office to review the retest policy. Utilize study packets or visit the Learning Center for tutoring services prior to retesting.
