Both the Peosta and Calmar campuses of Northeast Iowa Community College have implemented community initiatives supporting education for NICC students as well as the surrounding communities. The College hosts various events and conferences each year for the general public to attend. Additionally, summer camps are offered each year in the summer.
The Peosta Outdoor Learning Lab was created in 2006 and consists of a wildlife habitat and native vegetation east of the campus. The goals of the Outdoor Learning Lab include utilizing native plants in a demonstrative setting, educating students and the community about those native plants, reducing run-off and improving water quality and providing a habitat for wildlife and restoring the Mississippi flyaway.
Located on the Calmar campus, the sustainable prairie was reintroduced as an educational tool as well as a way to reduce energy costs.
