The Dairy Foundation
The Northeast Iowa Dairy Foundation is a nonprofit organization developed to address the need to retain young people in rural areas while bolstering the economic impact of dairy farms in northeast Iowa through education.
In 2000, the foundation opened the one-of-a-kind Dairy Center that includes an educational facility and an operating dairy farm with 280 cows. To provide more demonstration and education about current technology, the Dairy Foundation implemented two Lely robotic milking units at Iowa's Dairy Center in December of 2013. Along with the addition of this technology the barn was converted to tunnel ventilation and sand bedding was introduced.
Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC), Iowa State University Extension and Midwest Dairy Association (MDA) partner with the Dairy Foundation. The Foundation strives to educate NICC agriculture students, current dairy producers, and dairy consumers.
In 2010, the Foundation began hosting Breakfast on the Farm which is held annually every June.
Iowa's Dairy Center is not only a working farm, but a tourism facility where you can learn about modern dairy farming. Please call to set up tour arrangements.
Iowa’s Dairy Story
The Foundation partners with Iowa State University Extension to educate youth about the importance of dairying and dairy products through a program called Iowa's Dairy Story.
Iowa's Dairy Story hones in on a target audience of third, fourth and fifth grade children and their teachers. The program not only includes interactive nutritional information on the value of dairy products in a healthy diet, but it also takes students on the journey of how green grass becomes milk in their glass with the help of true economic engines - dairy cows.
Museum and Artifacts
This collection of dairy memorabilia features the early tools of the dairying trade while giving visitors a past-to-present lesson on Iowa's dairy industry. Items were collected from various donors, including the original pieces of the Iowa Holstein Museum. The display features collections of milk bottles, butter presses, breed magazines and much more!
