The NICC team will take on Iowa Lakes Community College next on Saturday, Sept. 19.

CALMAR—The Northeast Iowa Community College Sports Shooting team won its first meet of the season in a virtual match against Kirkwood Community College, 359-358. The teams competed on Sept. 12 in the fall season opener.

NICC student athletes competing in the event included Kaylie Klimesh, Nathan Breska, Dylan Elsbernd, Zach Schroeder and Chetanya Shivakumar.

Top female individual scores for NICC included first-place Klimesh (96) followed by Chetanya Shivakumar (25). Top male individual scores were Nathan Breska (90), Dylan Elsbernd (90) and Zach Schroeder (58).

“I was happy to get back out and compete after my high school career didn’t end as planned,” said Dylan Elsbernd, the first-year NICC student athlete with an impressive start to the season.

Kaylie Klimesh, who placed first among female competitors at the event, reflected, “It was a fun first meet, even though by the end of it my arms were hurting! I’m glad that the rain stayed away so we didn’t have to compete in the rain.”

Head coach Anthony Sisneros praised the athletes’ performances. “It’s exciting to get the season started with a victory. We couldn’t ask for any better weather conditions considering how the weather was during the past week. Our student athletes put up some excellent scores and I look forward to watch their progression as the season goes on,” Sisneros said.
