Fueling Iowa’s Healthcare Pipeline: NICC Launches Sterile Processing Certificate
Thursday, August 20, 2026
Before a surgeon makes the first incision or a surgical team enters the operating room, an invisible line of defense has already done its work. In hospitals and surgical centers, dedicated professionals work meticulously behind the scenes to clean, decontaminate, sterilize and assemble every single surgical instrument. They are Sterile Processing Technicians—the vital backbone of infection control and surgical safety.
To help local job seekers step into this high-demand role without putting their lives on hold, Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) is launching its new Sterile Processing Technician Career Pathway Certificate (CPC). This 14-week program consists of one in-person lab day, with the remainder of the course delivered through live online instruction at scheduled class times.
The program offers an accelerated path to job stability and career growth in a rapidly expanding field. Classes are scheduled to start on Oct. 20, 2026, and upon successful completion, graduates will be prepared for their next steps toward earning the Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) designation. To achieve full national credentialing, candidates must pass the CRCST certification exam through the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association and complete the required hands-on experience in a sterile processing department (SPD).
“Our mission has always been to provide high-quality education that leads directly to meaningful employment,” said NICC Health Program Developer Kelly Deeney. “By expanding our accessible healthcare pathways to include Sterile Processing, we’re opening doors to rewarding careers and directly supporting the local healthcare workforce our community relies on.”
The certificate isn't just a great fit for healthcare newcomers; it is also an ideal stepping stone for current working professionals. Certified nurse aides, medical assistants, dental assistants and nursing students can use the program to diversify their skill sets and boost their earning potential. Furthermore, for those dreaming of advancing even further into surgical care, the certificate creates a seamless gateway into Surgical Technician training through the College’s academic partnership with Kirkwood Community College.
Getting started in this high-impact field is built to be accessible. The program costs $2,399, but no-cost tuition is available through grant funding for qualifying students. To learn more about eligibility requirements or to secure a spot in an upcoming class, prospective students can visit nicc.edu/sterileprocessing or call 563.562.3263, ext. 1399.
