As part of the program, a Registered Apprentice is employed by a partnering business, earning a wage, while completing the classroom-related training instruction and on-the-job learning. As the apprentice's knowledge and skill set advances, their wage increases.

Have you ever read a story that inspired you to try something new, pursue a goal or learn more? Although achieving your dreams can greatly affect your own path in life, it also has the potential to impact others.

Matt Digmann knows this firsthand. Matt recently completed his Tool and Die Maker Apprenticeship through Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC), in partnership with Bodine Electric Company, after being inspired by a story he read.

Matt was hired at Bodine in 2008 as a CNC Setup Operator. Mechanically inclined and eager to learn, Matt tried out various departments, learning new skills, operating multiple machines and settling into the gearing department as a team lead before pursuing an opportunity as a Senior Tool and Die Maker.

Just as the new position opened up for Matt, he read about Cody Bergfeld completing his Tool and Die Maker Apprenticeship through NICC. Cody’s story set the wheels in motion for Matt and sparked his interest to learn more. Matt reached out to Cody on Facebook to find out how the apprenticeship worked for him, researched what the College had to offer and discussed the opportunity with Bodine Electric and his wife.

The Tool and Die Maker Apprenticeship is one of several Department of Labor-approved Registered Apprenticeships that the College offers in partnership with local businesses. As part of the program, a Registered Apprentice is employed by a partnering business, earning a wage, while completing the classroom-related training instruction and on-the-job learning. As the apprentice's knowledge and skill set advances, their wage increases.

Matt found value in the program, instantly applying what he learned in class on the job. He noted, “Using NICC for my apprenticeship was key. They had the classes I needed to expand my knowledge. The relationship NICC had with Bodine and the flexibility between both parties was excellent.”

Kelli Klaas, Director of Human Resources at Bodine Electric, explained, “The partnership gives apprentices a structured path to gain both technical skills and real-world experience simultaneously. They’re learning while contributing meaningfully to our company, which boosts their confidence and engagement. For us, it helps build a pipeline of trained, loyal employees who understand our systems and culture from the ground up. In the long run, it will help us reduce turnover, close skill gaps and strengthen our internal talent pool.”

She further noted, “Partnering with NICC has been a great decision for us because of their strong commitment to hands-on learning and workforce development. NICC has a reputation for aligning their training programs with real industry needs, which makes their graduates better prepared for the workplace. We chose to partner with NICC for the apprenticeship program because they were responsive, collaborative and flexible in helping us design a program that truly fits our company’s operations and goals.”

One important component of the apprenticeship program is working with a mentor while doing on-the-job learning.

Matt was mentored by Bodine’s Steve Friedmann during the program. Matt found the mentorship to be a huge asset noting, “You have the knowledge and experience of a seasoned professional—to have their advice and knowledge is key.”

Steve also found value in the mentorship process, stating “It’s incredibly rewarding to share what you’ve learned and watch someone else grow because of it. As a mentor, you’re not just teaching, you’re also learning. The process sharpens your leadership and communication skills and often gives you fresh insight through the eyes of a developing professional. There’s a real sense of pride and purpose in helping someone build confidence, navigate challenges and succeed in their role.”

Steve shared, “Working with Matt has been a great experience. He’s focused, eager to learn and takes real pride in his work. From the beginning of his apprenticeship, he’s shown a strong work ethic and a willingness to take feedback and run with it. It’s been gratifying to see his skills develop and his confidence grow. I’m excited to see where his path leads.”

Matt lives with his wife, Lori and their two children, Colin and Carly, on a small family farm outside of Worthington. When not in the toolroom at Bodine, he enjoys farming, spending time with family and just being outdoors. Matt wants others to know, “As a nontraditional college student, it’s possible to work full time, raise a family, go to college and still enjoy your life.”
