Restoring more than smiles: NICC dental clinic offers low-cost fresh start
Tuesday, November 25, 2025
For many, the hesitation to visit a dentist isn’t just about the drill—it’s about the fear of the bill, or worse, the fear of being judged.
At the Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) dental clinic in Peosta, a transformation is happening that goes deeper than cleanings and fillings. Here, the next generation of dental professionals is providing low-cost, empathetic care to uninsured patients who haven’t been to the dentist in years.
A safe place to smile again
“No matter how long it’s been, a fresh start is waiting,” said Jennifer Kohlmeyer, NICC dental assisting clinic coordinator and faculty member. “The NICC dental clinic provides a welcoming, learning-centered environment where gentle care and understanding come first. We’re here to help, not judge.”
That philosophy is the heartbeat of the NICC clinic. Established in 1973, the clinic has bridged a critical gap in Northeast Iowa for over 50 years.
“Dental care is often neglected due to a lack of access to affordable services,” Kohlmeyer explains, noting that 25% of adults aged 35 to 44 have untreated cavities. “When these issues are not addressed early, they can become serious.”
Treating dental decay can not only prevent toothaches but also reduce the risk of future health issues, such as heart disease, respiratory infections and oral complications related to diabetes. This care also has an immediate and profound impact on mental well-being. A healthy smile rebuilds the confidence needed to ace a job interview or laugh freely at a social gathering without hiding behind a hand.
Students and community: Helping each other
The clinic operates on a unique model of neighbors helping neighbors. Community members receive affordable, gentle care, including examinations, cleanings and fillings. In return, NICC dental assisting students gain invaluable hands-on experience working alongside licensed volunteer dentists and hygienists.
It is a learning-centered environment where students don’t just practice procedures; they practice making patients feel safe, comfortable and relaxed. By the time these students graduate, they aren’t just ready for a job; they are ready to serve their communities with compassion.
