Your Next Chapter Starts Here: NICC Launches "WISE" Program for Adults 55+
Monday, July 20, 2026
Retirement is rarely about slowing down anymore—it is about finally having the time to dive into the things you actually want to do.
Recognizing this shift, Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) is launching WISE (Wisdom, Inspiration, Social, Experiences), a brand-new hub for adults aged 55 and better. Based out of the Calmar campus, WISE isn't your traditional continuing education program. Think of it more like a "camp for grown-ups"—a welcoming space designed to blend thought-provoking learning with genuine social connection.
For Amy Lasack, vice president of NICC Business and Community Solutions, the program fills a vital need in our community.
“We know that learning doesn’t stop at retirement," Lasack says. "This program creates opportunities for adults 55 and older to explore new interests, build friendships and stay actively engaged in meaningful ways.”
New Experiences, New Friends
At its heart, WISE is about keeping life interesting. It’s an easy way for local residents to stay active, try something new and catch up with neighbors. The program is built entirely around flexibility: there are no long-term commitments or grueling schedules. You can simply pick and choose the specific classes, workshops or day trips that actually sound fun to you.
The program offers a wide variety of activities, making it easy to find something that fits your passions:
- Health and Wellbeing: Featuring practical courses like Home Health Basics and Wellness for Life.
- Hands-On Learning: Ranging from history talks and crafting workshops to home maintenance and care series.
- Adventure and Travel: Including upcoming community day trips, like an excursion to historic McGregor and local wineries.
Kickoff Event: Shuffle, Snack and Skadoo!
The excitement officially begins this September with a lively three-week series designed to get people laughing, talking and thinking fast.
Shuffle, Snack and Skadoo! (Class #107131) will meet on three consecutive Fridays—Sept. 11, 18 and 25. The series centers around the addictive card game, 13 Skadoo. Whether you are a seasoned card player or have never picked up a deck, the atmosphere is all about lighthearted play.
Beyond the fun, card games like 13 Skadoo are a great way to boost memory, increase focus and sharpen quick-thinking strategies. And because no good card game is complete without refreshments, snacks are provided each day—making it the perfect, low-pressure environment to kick off your WISE experience and meet your neighbors.
Shaping the Future of WISE
This is just the beginning. As the program grows, NICC wants the wisdom of the community to help determine what comes next.
“We also want to hear directly from participants about the types of classes and experiences they would like to see,” Lasack notes. “We want to continue building offerings that reflect their interests and passions.”
Whether you want to master a new hobby, keep your mind sharp or just find a new group of friends to share a laugh with, WISE is your invitation to embrace your next chapter.
