Mission Accomplished: How Sam Mahr and 71 NICC Classmates Took Their Next Step

When Sam Mahr set his sights on enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps, he knew the road ahead would demand discipline, grit and hard work. But before he could step into uniform, he had one crucial hurdle left to clear: earning his high school equivalency diploma.
"My decision to enlist in the Marine Corps made me a whole lot more dedicated to complete it," Sam said. "It pushed me, and my recruiters pushed me."
Focusing on his goals step by step, Sam studied and passed his High School Equivalency Test (HiSET) at Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC). He used the experience as a launchpad for his upcoming military enlistment and a long-term career goal in law enforcement.
"It's something that I always wanted to do, and the military will definitely help me with it," he shared.
This month, Sam joined dozens of fellow students at the College’s Calmar campus to walk across the stage and celebrate a major milestone.
He was far from alone. Between July 2025 and June 2026, 72 students across Northeast Iowa earned their high school equivalency diplomas through NICC's testing centers—24 in Calmar, 39 in Dubuque and nine in Oelwein. The College honored their accomplishments during ceremonies on July 9 on the Calmar campus and July 16 at the NICC Town Clock Business Center in Dubuque.
For Sam, the ceremony was all about honoring the people who helped him reach the finish line.
"I was most excited to celebrate with my parents, some of the recruiters who have pushed me along the way and family," he said.
Stories like Sam's highlight the heart of the College’s Adult Education & Literacy programs, which give adult learners free preparation and a direct path toward new personal and professional possibilities. All HSED graduates also receive a $600 scholarship toward continued learning at NICC.
“Seeing our graduates celebrate is a powerful reminder of the persistence behind each diploma,” said Dan Cosley, NICC adult education and literacy director. “Every student’s path is different, but this milestone can open doors to employment, further education and new possibilities for their families.”
For Sam, the experience proved that big dreams come down to everyday persistence. His advice to anyone on the fence about going back to school is simple:
"Keep working toward your goal, think about what is going to help you in life and take it one test at a time."
