Considering Online or Hybrid Courses: Are They Right for You?
Online or hybrid courses share many elements with traditional education, such as instructors, classmates, course materials, and assignments. However, they differ in requiring more self-discipline and self-direction due to their flexibility. To thrive in online or hybrid learning, certain work habits, learning styles, and skills are essential.
It's a common misconception that online courses are easier. Despite not attending classes in person, students must still:
- Read course materials.
- Participate in discussions with classmates and instructors.
- Complete tests and assignments.
- Engage in group projects.
Additionally, consider technical and environmental factors:
- Do you have constant access to a computer with a reliable internet connection?
- Are you proficient in using email, including working with attachments?
- Can you conduct basic online searches and research?
- Do you have a quiet space for studying and taking tests without interruptions?
- Are you capable of submitting assignments and participating in online forums?
Before enrolling in an online or hybrid course, consider if you can answer ‘TRUE’ to these questions:
- SCHEDULE: True or False. I am good at estimating and following through with how much time I need to accomplish daily activities.
- AVAILABILITY: True or False. Online classes will fit my availability because I have a lot going on in my personal life.
- INTERNET ACCESS: True or False. I feel comfortable working on a computer and I have reliable access to the internet.
- INDEPENDENCE: True or False. Working alone on projects is preferable for me.
- READING & WRITING: True or False. Reading and writing are enjoyable and I am in the habit of doing both most days.
