Undecided Students
Explore Majors & Plan Your Future
At NICC, it’s okay to begin your education while exploring your options. In fact, approximately 20-50 percent* of incoming college students start career undecided— so it’s completely normal to not know your career path right after high school - or as an adult.
Our career and academic advisors are experts at guiding students through college and career planning and have years of experience. They know first-hand career paths aren’t always straight— they even changed majors themselves before finding their passion, working with students like you. Because they’ve been in your shoes, they understand what it’s like to be undecided and are here to help you explore options, build skills and connect with opportunities that matter.
Take the First Step!
Find My Path
Begin your college journey with guided career planning at Northeast Iowa Community College. The Find My Path semester gives you time and flexibility to explore majors and careers while completing general education courses that count toward your degree. Through career-focused classes like Exploring Careers and job shadowing, you’ll gain direction, skills and confidence to take your next step.
Career Counseling
Our academic advisors specialize in working with undecided students. They’ll help you identify strengths, explore programs and connect you to possible career paths. Together, you’ll set goals, build a plan for success and learn about tools such as the exploratory/undecided major. Advisors also guide you through career outlooks, job options, earning potential and education requirements so you can make informed decisions.
Job Shadow/Internship
Before you decide on a career path, we’ll connect you with work-based learning. Through job shadows and internships, you can observe professionals in the field, ask questions and see if the career is the right fit for you.
